Low-Maintenance Yard Ideas – from Jennifer at Weichert

Low-Maintenance Yard Ideas
No one wants to spend all of their free time doing yardwork, yet a neat and tidy landscaped property is desirable, especially if you have your home on the market. For home sellers, the importance of curb appeal cannot be denied, and available time is even more limited than usual while your home is for sale. That’s why it makes sense to pick plants and other landscaping materials that don’t require a lot of maintenance.

For example, do your research and choose grasses that are disease resistant and grow slowly. This will minimize the time that you have to spend fertilizing and mowing the lawn. If you have the option, limit the amount of grassy space on your property by incorporating other groundcover such as ornamental grasses and creepers. Both will smother weeds and require little to no maintenance.

When it comes to bushes, choose ones that don’t require frequent pruning such as azaleas and hydrangeas. Each plant has a hundreds of varieties, so there are options for every climate and taste. For flowers, perennials are best since they come back year after year.

Another great investment in your yard is mulch. There are many benefits to laying mulch around your plants. Mulch helps stop weeds, minimizes the number of times you need to water and acts as a soil enricher as it decays. Select hardwood or pine bark mulch which are long lasting. However, keep in mind that mulch decays into the earth and needs to be replaced yearly.
